We’re extremely proud to introduce our new leading edge, 100% biodegradable, home compostable caps.
These new caps are made from advanced biotechnology using microbes that are fermented to grow and scale in the lab (much like our biotech fragrance ingredients). The result is a stable, soft to touch cap that is biodegradable on contact with microbes in the environment which use it as an energy source.
We’re proud to share that we have replaced our perfume caps with a more sustainable, non-plastic option that’s fully home compostable. Made from biotech material, Vivomer, the caps enzymatically break down over 20 weeks when returned to nature, leaving no trace.

Previously, our caps were made from a Bakelite, a thermoset resin material crafted from natural gas and plant-based cellulose derived from wood grown in sustainably managed FSC forests. Like our formulas, these were not derived from petroleum.
Our new perfume caps are an innovative advancement. The cap material is made from microbes that are fermented through a biotech process to grow and scale — similar to how beer, wine or cheese is made. Microbes store energy in their cells as granules. After fermentation, these granules are extracted and made into our perfume caps. The material is stable in use but biodegrades upon disposal, with microbes in the environment utilising it as an energy source.

RECYCLABILITY
Our previous caps included a magnetic closure, however this, coupled with the Bakelite material they were made from, meant the caps were not widely recyclable.
As the Vivomer material of our new caps is not plastic, it is not recyclable. Instead, the caps are fully home compostable and biodegrade within 20 weeks.
If you don’t have a home composting system, the best way to discard your Abel Vivomer perfume cap is by disposing of it in your household rubbish. There, it will slowly decompose without damaging the environment or aquatic life.
