In honour of Valentine’s Day, Worn By Them explores how fragrance becomes an olfactory signature of those we love.

For our second interview, we spoke with LA-based couple, Kate Owen and Julia Platt Hepworth about how scent is worn by them — shaping daily rituals, closeness, and moments lived together.

Kate, a photographer, and Julia, a stylist, first met when Kate was searching for a stylist for her LA shoot, and discovered Julia’s work.

"I first slid into Julia’s DMs when I was looking for a stylist for a shoot in LA. It was a big job and I was driving the producer crazy trying to find the right stylist until I came across Julia’s work. She was the perfect fit! It didn’t hurt that I thought she was a total hottie. Fast forward we did the 5 day shoot and I kept it very professional until we were doing wrap drinks. It was then I decided it was now or never! I made sure to sit next to her and as the night went on we were the only people left at the bar.

The next day she texted me asking when she was going to see me again and I knew we were on. Julia came out to New York for my birthday a couple weeks later and we’ve been attached ever since!" — Kate

"I'd describe Kate as something fresh and effervescent but still a little earthy; Clean laundry dried in the sun, a burst of citrus." — Julia

"Julia is like inhaling the scent from a freshly brewed cup of coffee and then a chocolate cake baking in the oven. You just want more!" — Kate

"As someone who doesn’t even wear deodorant, I’m very sensitive to scents. I like ones that are natural and subtle. I’ve been liking Nurture when I want to add a little something special." — Kate

"Cyan Nori - so unique and I love the subtleness of it. I've also recently been enjoying Laundry Day, I guess I have a thing for clean laundry." — Julia

"We love a day of little treats. Walking to the coffee shop, looking at magazines, maybe getting a donut.. exploring different shops (currently obsessed with anything kitchen or design related).

Lately we’ve been on a Dim Sum kick and we’re trying different spots looking for our favorite. Still on the hunt!" — Kate
