Banana is one of the rarest notes in fine perfumery, sweet, tropical and faintly milky. Abel uses green banana, the unripe note, which reads cleaner and creamier than the ripe fruit and brings warmth, lift and a flash of wit to a fragrance.

What is the Sample Sale?

Q: What is the Sample Sale?
A: The Abel Sample Sale is a one-off annual event where archive and distressed stock is sold at a 50% discount. These products may have packaging imperfections, but the fragrance inside remains correct.

This year’s event will be the FINAL Sample Sale. The sale is available for 24 hours only, while stocks last.

A: Sample Sale stock can be identified online by the “Sample Sale” label on the product listing. If a product does not have this label, it is not Sample Sale stock.

Sample Sale products are offered at a discount due to one or more of the following reasons:
- Damaged outer box
- Tester packaging (perfume packaged in a plain tester box)
- Old retail stickers or barcodes on the box or cellophane
- Wrong name printed on the perfume bottle (the fragrance listed online reflects the perfume inside the bottle)
- Damaged print on the bottle
- Scratches on the cap
- No cellophane
- Marks on the outer box
- No notecard inside the box
- Mismatched boxes and perfume
- Sediment or discolouration of the perfume — this does not affect the fragrance and is a natural reaction between some ingredients

Where does banana fragrance come from?

Banana the fruit does not lend itself to traditional extraction. There is no banana absolute or essential oil, so the note has to be composed from other natural aromatics that read as banana. That technical difficulty is part of why banana hardly appears in fine fragrance at all.

In natural perfumery a green banana accord is built from naturally occurring aroma molecules, chosen to lean green and creamy rather than sweet and candy-like. Abel builds its green banana into a 100% natural composition, where it opens Miami Split bright and creamy before stepping aside for the burnt caramel and white oud underneath. It pairs beautifully with caramel for a Bananas Foster effect, and with wood notes like oud and labdanum that give it weight and stop it tipping into dessert.

Banana is a top note, so it lifts the opening of a fragrance for the first 15 to 30 minutes before the heart and base take over. It sets the mood rather than lingering: bright, playful and warm.
