In creating Black Anise, Isaac and I set out to prove to the world once and for all that natural didn’t need to mean simple, botanical and subtle. That, done well, natural perfume can also be dark, sexy and strong.
To create this sultry intense beauty, we turned to the depths of the natural palette. Dark spices such as the scent’s namesake star anise have a silky rich aspect, especially when expertly paired with intense cassis and dark cherry. The heart and base of this scent came together in a flurry of vices - coffee, cacao and Isaac’s late night tobacco, cade and guaiac accord.
The overall effect is a confident, broody late night scent that will take you anywhere and be sure to turn heads.

In Black Anise, you’ll first smell a licorice-like note of star anise, before cacao, blackcurrant and cherry emerge as the rich and tart heart notes, softening the spicy opening. The fragrance settles into a smoky drydown, with tobacco coming to the fore for a subtle leather-like scent.
No. The tobacco note in Black Anise refers to the scent profile derived from the tobacco plant, often created by extracting the leaves. It adds a warm, rich, and sometimes smoky or leathery depth to perfumes without containing nicotine, so it’s purely a scent experience without the effects of nicotine.
Black Anise was designed as a bold challenge for Frances Shoemack, Abel’s founder, and master perfumer, Isaac Sinclair, to push the boundaries of traditional natural fragrance conventions.
Master perfumer Isaac Sinclair shares, “Naturals often have an (often misguided) reputation for being simple, subtle, and organic-smelling. While every ingredient in Black Anise is natural, the very deliberate selection of dense, powerful notes such as tobacco and star anise, paired with a rich fruit accord of cherry and cassis, makes for a dynamic, long-lasting, and distinctive scent.”

Isoeugenol is a molecule with a sweet spicy profile, it can be derived from plants or synthesized from petrochemicals. It is also present in many plants, naturally occurring Ingredients found in Black Anise, include anise, cinnamon, star anise, clove. It is also found naturally in ingredients such as basil and fennel.
In Abel fragrances, Isoeugenol is never added as a molecule, but only as a component of an essential oil and it is present in extremely low concentrations (similar levels to using cinnamon in cooking, for example).
Isoeugenol is not a specific ingredient, but rather one of the 80 molecules deemed as potential allergenic by IFRA and is required to be included on the INCI list. RIFM (Research for Institute of Fragrance Material) concludes Isoeugenol is a moderate skin sensitiser and as such, the IFRA maximum limit has been put in place of 0.11% and is based on a concentration that is not expected to cause skin sensitization. Noting that in a large patch test study, 98.7% of people show no response to Isoeugenol. When listed on an INCI list, there is no way to know whether the Isoeugenol is from plants or petrochemicals. At Abel, isoeugenol is always naturally derived from plants.
Top notes are the first scents you detect immediately after applying a fragrance. They are light and vibrant but fade quickly. Once the top notes fade, the heart notes begin to emerge, forming the core of the fragrance. These notes bridge the transition from the initial fresh burst to the deeper, richer base notes. As the fragrance dries down on the skin, the base notes develop, providing lasting power and depth. Base notes are typically deep, warm, and heavy, leaving a lasting impression long after the other notes have faded.
